Learning Designer & Instructional Designer

Online Learning, Properly Built.

I am a learning designer with six years of experience building fully online modules in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I come from a teaching background and a design degree, so I pay attention to how a module works for the learner and to how it looks and feels to use. Based in Nottingham, available remotely.

What I work with

Tools &
Skills

I build modules in code rather than only in an authoring tool, which keeps the finished module close to what was designed and gives me room to shape how it behaves for the learner.

Selected
Work

A selection of work from six years designing and building fully online modules at Nottingham Trent University.

01
FutureLearn · Open Course
Stepping into Leadership, a course for new higher education managers

FutureLearn runs on social learning: discussion sits beside every step rather than after it. I designed and built this open course to that model, pacing the material around the conversation instead of treating it as an add-on.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by learners, with over 2,000 enrolments. A three-week open course, aligned to the AHEP professional framework, built with Nottingham Business School.

02
Languages · Interactive
Online language courses with custom interactions

Developed language modules where the interactions had to carry the teaching, so I built custom practice components in JavaScript when the standard quiz templates could not do the job.

Now in its established form after running across multiple years and cohorts, with strong learner take-up.

03
AI Pilot · JavaScript
Piloting Lumi AI with custom prompt injection tools

I led a pilot bringing an AI tutor into online modules, building custom JavaScript tools that injected structured prompts to keep the AI anchored to the module content it was meant to be teaching.

Built and ready to launch. I have recreated the two tools as a working demo you can try.

Branching Scenario · Social Work
A branching scenario for difficult conversations in social work

For a Social Worker apprenticeship course, I built an interactive branching scenario where learners navigate a difficult conversation with a case, make decisions, and see where each one leads.

Gave apprentices a safe way to frame and apply a theory for handling difficult conversations, practising the judgement before facing it in real casework.

How I work

The
Process

01
Scope

We agree who the learners are, what they need to be able to do, and how much content actually exists. I will ask awkward questions here so there are fewer surprises later.

02
Structure

I map the module using ABC Learning Design, so you can see the shape of the learning and sign it off before anything gets built. Changes are cheap at this stage.

03
Build

I build in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, to WCAG 2.2. You get a working prototype early rather than a document describing one.

04
Review and handover

Two rounds of consolidated feedback, then delivery as SCORM or straight into your platform, with the source files and a short guide to maintaining it.

Availability
From November 2026. Remote, UK based. Short projects and longer retained work both welcome.

About Me

Charlotte Crosby

Good design is not decoration on a course, it is part of what makes the learning work. A clear layout, a well-judged visual, an interaction that lets someone try something for themselves: these are often what help a concept actually land. I came to this through a design degree and secondary school teaching, and a real interest in the code underneath, so I understand how those interactions are built and not just how they should look.

For the past six years I have been a Learning Designer at Nottingham Trent University, building fully online modules in HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

I am currently looking for hybrid or fully remote instructional design roles, and I am open to freelance and contract work from November 2026.

Design Philosophy

01
Plan backwards from the learner
I start from what someone needs to do differently afterwards, not the content sitting in front of me. Structure follows from there.
02
Accessibility from the first line
Every module is built to WCAG 2.2 from the outset. Retrofitting accessibility later never works as well as designing for it from day one.
03
The code is part of the design
Working directly in HTML, CSS and JavaScript means less gets lost between the plan and what a learner actually opens.
04
Checked against real students
Nothing goes live untested. I work closely with academic teams and subject experts to see whether a module actually lands, then adjust it.
